Movie Thoughts: SMILE (18+)

Updated: Oct 18, 2022

So, after hearing all the hype and somewhat good reviews about the film, myself and Sam decided to book and go see it. On arrival to the cinema, we were both very excited to see the movie and purchased our snacks to enjoy throughout the movie; of course I had to get the nachos and a large mixed ICEE :)!

At first, I genuinely did get into the movie and was enjoying it, but about 30 minutes in, I started to find it quite boring and by the 1 hour mark, both myself and Sam found that it was very dragged out, especially considering it was nearly 2 hours long. I do, however, give the movie credit for the jump scares, as the majority of them did get both me and Sam.

Sam did not enjoy the film one bit and found it very boring; he said he felt like the film did not need to be so long (considering it was basically 2 hours long, I do have to agree) and probably could have been made it into a shorter film.

What is the movie about?

Warning - There will be some spoilers below so please skip to the rating section of this blog to avoid them!!

The movie was released in the United Kingdom on the 28th September 2022 and was directed by Parker Finn; also directed "Laura hasn't slept" (2020) and short film "The Hidebehind" (2018) . The age rating for this film is 18 by the BBFC due to its strong bloody violence. The run time of the movie is 1hr 55mins which to me seems a long time for this type of horror movie.

So the movie itself is about a psychiatrist, Dr. Rose Cotter (played by Sosie Bacon), who witnesses a patient who was admitted to her as an emergency due to the severity of her mental state, commit suicide in front of her; now if this wasn't traumatic enough, the patient was smiling the whole time towards the end. The psychiatrist is then given a week off work to get herself together and get some time away from work to deal with this traumatic event - which is understandable considering what she witnessed. Since the tragic death of the patient, the psychiatrist begins to see and hear people when they aren't actually there and has hallucinations which eventually drives her to insanity.

Overall Thoughts & Opinions

Overall, I give the movie a 6.5/10, would have been a 7 if it wasn't so long and dragged out; although I do see why it was in some aspects. The movie did have some really good jump scares however and I did find myself at certain points engaged in the movie, it just lost my attention a bit where it was dragging out and I did find some scenes very predictable (SPOILER - Like when the cat went missing and where it ended up).

Would I watch this movie again?

I wouldn't personally go out of my way to watch it, however if it was on or free to watch on Amazon Prime/Netflix then maybe I would put it on.

Would I recommend this movie?

Yes, but to certain people who I know would enjoy it; only because I feel it has a certain audience type and it is not everyones cup of tea.

I hope you have enjoyed this post,
